Self-publishing Looks Like It’s Taking Off

According to a July 30, 2010, article in Newsweek, authors are self-publishing and making it happen. That’s good news.

But, alas, I still must sit down everyday and write. That’s the hard part.

I’m reading Say Everything: How Blogging Began, What It’s Becoming, and Why It Matters, by Scott Rosenberg (cofounder of Salon.com) and I’m getting all this great history about blogging. (Which I think is really well-written and balanced, but I’m not a professional critic.) I’m getting a few great ideas that I’m thinking of implementing at work, when out of the blue comes an idea I could use for writing.

I am trying to write a story and I really want to get it done. (I will get it done.)

My Goal

Every time I sit down to write, I attempt to write a little mini-story, no matter how short. A little mini-story, or mini-scene. Something like that. Then I can mix and match and put it all together into the first draft. After that, I can edit and massage it and do all the really hard work.

I think the inspiration for this was an article from the Propellerheads folks; the ones that make the Reason music software. The story described how Nine Inch Nails puts together a tune. They recorded a bunch of different sounds and melodies, not knowing how or whether they’d fit together. That’s a great way to work, I think.

I can’t find the article now so I’ll just provide a link to the Propellerheads website, if you’re interested in learning more about some excellent music production software.
